I’m very happy to announce that Radix Magazine has published my short story called “Grady’s World.”
I wrote this story in 2018 for my MFA program. And I read it for my graduation presentation. You can read it at this link.
I have a thing for high school drama, perhaps because I experienced a lot of desperation and insanity in my own high school. Bad decisions, dangerous stuff that could have gotten me killed, friendships and relationships that seemed so singular and important. That line that young people tell themselves: No one has ever felt like this before.
This story is the story of Grady Boykins, a thirteen-year-old living in West Texas. He has his own kind of desperation, being left to care for his little sister when the other adult women in his life are no longer around. Though he would rather read comic books with friends, he is tasked with painting the house over the summer. He doesn’t want to, but he has no choice.
One day with no adults around, little Bertie disappears. It’s up to him to find her.
